ROUTER HAS NO SOFTWARE KEY
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Your router does not have any valid key.
Please, get valid key from www.mikrotik.com
and enter it at "System | License".
If you already have paid for this license, please,
press "Update Key" in "License Window"
Router will stop functioning after 23h and 50m if no valid key is entered.
Current installation "software ID": CDV0-R4KW
Questions
(1) Attention Mikrotik why is there no warning included on licence demo site that even though it is labelled as DEMO the procedure is not reversible, If it is, it’s certainly not included ?
(2) A DEMO should give a user a opportunity test before purchase and if not happy then be able to revert back to original licence, If I was supposed to export original licence first, once again not mentioned on licence website,
(3) A Licence FAQ should be included on the licence section of the website,
(4) If a 24hour countdown is started it stands to reason that a 24hour response from Mikrotik Support to address and licence issues,
Free Trial Key (Level 1) for RouterOS 2.9 and up
• has limits of maximum connections each for PPTP, PPPoE, Queues, NAT, EoIP, and DHCP
• does not have wireless interface support
• does not include version upgrades
• does not expire (no time limit)
• does not include support
• not for resale
After you install the router it will report a Software ID.
Software ID:
Device type:
login to your MikroTik account (https://www.mikrotik.com/client/), select ‘Request Key from Another Account’, then enter your SoftwareID, press the button. Enter received key to your RB
Thank you, sorted,
To avoid all this as I mentioned, if a licence FAQ and recovery was included on the licence upgrade/demo section of Mikrotik website, what I find annoying is a 24hr countdown to shutdown of the router and a automated response from support so far, pity I couldn’t put on a elapsed time clock for support response ?
Once again thanks
24h is free license (i.e. no license key), nothing unusual =)
My point is, while it may not be unusual to have a 24h licence free period, that posted on the licence section of Mikrotik should be a caution, be aware that if you install demo and want to revert back to original licence, then you need to …
I’m not sure - maybe you can install your old license directly (I almost sure you can). and if you don’t know how to obtain your initial RB license via MT website - support will help you. but if you even haven’t backup your previous license - it’s your fault =)
… if you even haven’t backup your previous license - it’s your fault =)
My point is everyone has 20:20 vision on hindsight but on the website licence section the link to
Wiki “All_about_licenses” should have been there ?
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/All_about_licenses
From this wiki it states:
_New 8 symbol SoftID
Since RouterOS 3.25 and 4.0beta3 new SoftID format is introduced. Your license menu will show both the old and the new SoftID. Even by upgrading to a new version, RouterOS will still work as before, but to use some of the new features, LICENSE UPDATE will be necessary. To do this, just click on “Update license key” button in Winbox (currently only in Winbox).
New SoftID’s are in the form of XXXX-XXXX (Four symbols, dash, four symbols).
The following actions will be taken:
- Winbox will contact …mikrotik dot com with your old SoftID
- …mikrotik dot com will check the database and see details about your key
- the server will generate a new key as “upgrade” and put it into the same account as old one
- Winbox will receive the new key and automatically License your router with the new key
- Reboot will be required
- New RouterOS features will be unlocked
Important Note!: If you see this button also in v3.24, don’t use it, it will not work._
I_f you ever wish to downgrade RouterOS, you will have to apply the OLD key before doing so. When RouterOS applies the NEW key, the OLD key is saved to a file, in the FILES folder, to make sure you have the old key handy.
Even more important: Don’t downgrade v4.0b3 to v3.23 or older. Use only v3.24 for downgrading, or you might lose your new format key._
I have checked my Mikrotik account and there is no OLD key saved but there is the demo key listed in my files section, and I would ask does this wiki apply to V3.30 ?
maybe you can install your old license directly (I almost sure you can)
Only one way to find out and will post back on this
DEMO key was generated by you, and there were no key in your account just because WinBox don’t know what’s your account name - you may request your key to your account, or find it locally under ‘Files’ section of RouterOS
OK - with Version 3.30
(1) Export old key, Unlike the Wiki instructions the old key is not exported to the files section of your Mikrotik Account,
(2) Import demo key
To revert back import back old key from the saved location - reboot
Just comparing my V3.30 to the one included on the Wiki “All_about_licenses”
the tab on V3.30 it has “Buy New Key” while on the Wiki it’s called “Upgrade/Get New Key..”

what’s your question exactly? I don’t understand why you keep making demo keys, when your router already came preinstalled with a normal license
Forget normal licence; forget upgrade to new license questions,
My question is which applies to downloading demo license only* and in my case reverting back to V3.30,
Why is there not a caution or instructions of recovery if you want to revert back to original license after trying the demo license included on the license section of Mikrotik website - and my previous posts on this matter was actions i had to take from advice given to revert back - simple?
All of which was avoidable if Mikrotik had included as mentioned a caution or recovery procedure,
I know now exactly how to revert but only after help from the forum and support,
I don’t understand why you keep making demo keys
Now unless i misunderstand the function of demo keys, is to trial the upgrade license (some functions disabled) before you purchase?
I did purchase a upgrade license in the end but originally my plan was:
(1) Download and try demo,
(2) Uninstall and revert back to original license,
(3) Purchase a upgrade license with the knowledge if I had issues I could revert back quickly,
But no2 of the plan is where all the posts on this matter occurred?
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:License_levels
Demo licenses do NOT demo the capabilities of higher level licenses, they demo the OS itself. If you already have a license it makes no sense to install a demo license.
Oops I should have (gone to specsavers?), to read the almost faded out font used for the title discription of the demo license was for level1 only, I had already a level 3, for whatever reason i thought the demo was for level 4 (wrong my mistake), pity Mikrotik does not have the license comparsion chart included in user account section?
Hi
i have mikrotik x86 system and i have problem with License key.
I Purchase key level 4, but i use first DEMO key, now i cant use the WISP AP (Level 4) key, because I purchase with wrong soft id, and now i cant edit this key to change soft id (that says: This key is already used).
How to remove the DEMO key and replace with new purchase key in my account on mikrotik.com ?
Please help me.
so, do you have L4 key for your softID or not? you should be able to change a few wrong chars in wrong SoftID one time per license. use your account at mikrotik.com

you can edit the key only once. then you need a new key
