Replace RB2011UIAS with CRS310-8G+2S+IN

Hi, i want to upgrade my network to 2.5G so it is time to replace the all mighty RB2011, the only Mikrotik option that will match my plan is the CRS310-8G+2S+IN switch which i understand it could be set as a router.

The RB2011 has a pretty basic setup. it is just providing internet connected to my ISP´s ONT as a PPPoE client and VPN server, no more fancy stuff.

I understand the CRS310 could present some connection speed issues but i’m not entirely sure if that will be a mayor drawback and to be honest i couldn’t found anything better based on price+features.

The 8x2.5G ports on the CRS310 will be more than enough for my current needs but on the other hand buying a RB5009 and adding one of those cheap generic 2.5G + SFP+ switches (tight budget here ) linked via the SFP+ port or the single 2.5G could be another option.

Please let me know your thoughts, i really like the CRS310 but i don’t want to find out that it won’t perform good as a router and endup buy the wrong hardware.

Thanks!

CRS devices are primarily switches, the CPU is not particularly powerful and not intended to provide anything approaching wirespeed routing - you might get around 400Mbps on a CRS310.

Whilst the switch chips in CRS3xx and CRS5xx devices support L3 hardware offloading the device in the CRS310 does not support fasttrack or NAT offloading, you could probably get wirespeed routing between local networks but would still be stuck with the CPU limiting NAT for WAN traffic.

Suggests 5009 feeding CRS 310…

What is the throughput of the ISP(s)?
Is most of the traffic in the same vlan or is it mostly across vlans.
Is the majority of traffic from vlan to internet?
