RESOLVED: problem on RB112 Please help asap

I just got a RB112 in and noticed that it did not have the ppp package which i needed. So i read on the forums that you could upload the packages from the RB500 to it and then reboot and use those.

I did that and after rebooting i could not connect to the unit. I then attached a serial cable to it and fired up hyperterminal but all i get is a 6 or 7 characters of garbage.

the unit does beep after about 3 seconds and the amber light goes off leaving only the blue.

Any help on fully reseting this device?? i’m leaving tomorrow and i really need this device back up

thanks.

try with netinstall, follow this guide:
http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.9/guide/netinstall

I cant even console connect to a working rb532 i have..

what do i need ive tried a straight through cable and a null modem cable neither work…the straight through gives me garbage the null gives me nothing

i use this machine all the time to console connect to my switch and other routers.

what do i need?

thanks

You are probably using the wrong connection speed on your serial cable…I think both RBs are default at 115200.

BAM! thanks so much…such a simple thing with these things! i’m so used to 9600 i could have SWORE i read that 2 times in the manual.

BUT THIS DOES NOT FIX MY PROBLEM ON THE RB112.

I can get into the bootloader/setup menu just fine on my 532’s but on this problem 112 when i hit a key immediatly its just

goes to loading kernal…ok

setup elf image…ok

jumping to kernal code
system haulted.

thats it…what do i do to get into setup to re-install?

thanks

Try netinstall to reinstall your board, follow the documentation given by Normis.

I know that..but if you read what your are refering to YOU NEED to set the boot setting for the RB by getting into the config menu.

Problem is I cant get into that menu.

any ideas?

you have to be really quick, by default you have 1 sec to hit any button to get to that menu.

goes to loading kernal…ok <---- it appears before this line, so if you see this, you are to slow, reboot and try again.
recently learnt that lesson the hard way.

I suggest doing the following with both RB100 and RB500 series boards.
Use an extra jumper, connect it over the RESTER pins found on top of the RB. Press the RESET button, and while holding it, plug in the power. Wait for the MT to bootup. Monitor this with a console connection. (Remember BAUD=115200 and FLOW CONTROL=NONE, else you can’t seem to type sometimes). As soon as you see “Ressetting Router to default settings” or something like that, you know the RB is reloading the operating system from the NAND to the shipped state. This helped me a few times (when I tried uploading MT2.8.x config settings).

The mistake you made first of all, was to install wrong packages. The RB100 series are shipped with PPPoE and all, you just have to install it. Login to the router, assign an IP, load winbox etc, then click on SYSTEM, PACKAGES. Select all the packages you need, and ENABLE them. On your next reboot, they will be installed (might take some time).

This should fix your problems.

All I had to do was click to system->packages, select the package I wanted then click “enable” on the RB112 I received last week.

WOW! thanks so much..
it was the flow control. everything i read said use hardware and that had always worked fine for me with the 500s i usually connect to. now i can get in to the setup menu and reinstall the os.

tks! u saved me a 112 and a lvl 4 lic.
