"Roaming"/Mesh over ethernet between hAP AX3 and cAP AC?

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out, if it is possible to set up wifi roaming/mesh over ethernet between a hAP AX3 and a cAP AC, since one of these is wifi5, the other is wifi6.

My setup looks like this:

main router: hAP AX3 (with wifi is off at the moment)

AP: cAP AC via wired connection (of course…) to the AX3, this device is only responsible for wifi, still using old wireless package on the device

These two devices are quite far from each other, and in the room, where the AX3 is placed, the wifi signal is minimal, therefore I thought about using the wifi capabilities of the AX3.

The idea is to keep the AX3 as main router (connected directly to the internet, DHCP, Firewall, etc) and on enable the wifi interface using mesh over ethernet.

I have not yet found an answer, if:

  • is this possible at all (mesh over ethernet between these two devices)?
  • if possible, then I need to install wifi packages on the cAP AC to ensure, that both AX3 and AC has wifi package?
  • how to do the setup?

Any kind of help is appreciated, because if it is not even possible to use these two devices together in the same network, then I just stop wasting my time and try to find a solution (e.g. HW upgrade, etc).

yes. its called ft-over-ds (fast transition over distributed system)

yes. But remember cap ac = yes. hap ac = no

Just to be clear cause i went down this rabbit hole

Intel and Microsoft documentation states that FT is primarily designed for Enterprise networks (802.1X). 802.11r/k/v is not supported on Windows for personal security networks (WPA2-PSK, WPA3-SAE).

Android works fine on WPA2/3 PSK
