Ros 5.0b2 can't install on ESXi 4.0

I try to install ros 5.0b2 on esxi and after cd was read capslock led starts blinking – means kernel panic but I do not know reason.
On this same virtual machine ros 4.9 was installed correctly.

Do you know correct settings for virtual machine to install 5.0 oon virtual machine ?

Can anyone else confirm this?

just checked: yep, booting from CD, loading linux, initrd, ‘Ready.’ - and stopped, caps lock and scroll lock blinking

That’s why I made my own CD image.

did you send it to support@mikrotik.com?

No, I did not. I posted this CD image in a another thread several weeks ago. I’m surprised that they are not aware of the issue, it has been a problem since the first 5.0 beta release.

OK, I want to take time out of my day to give you karma for this. It completely solved my issue.

I was trying to install 5.0 beta 2 on an x86 platform.

Dell Optiplex 780 (latest BIOS firmware (A03))
Core2 Proc
1GB DDR3
SATA to CF adapter (256mb card)
integrated gigabit network card
SATA controller set to ATA mode

I was able to use Netinstall 4.9 on my desktop PC to install the package to the CF card which I then put in the Optiplex 780. It would boot off the CF, install ROS, and load ROS 4.9 successfully all the way to the command prompt. However 4.x does not have the gigabit NIC drivers for my motherboard NIC.

So I downloaded the Netinstall v5 and attempted to install ROS 5.0 beta 2 using the same procedure. The installation to the CF card went fine but when I put the card into the Optiplex 780 only the Linux loader part would load but it would freeze just as Chupaka described above.

I tried everything to resolve this. I reformatted the card. Attempted to install every package to the CF card. Changed the SATA mode to ACHI (did not boot) and “Legacy” mode (booted but same problem prevailed.) I tweeked every possible setting in the BIOS but the same issue with initial booting to install ROS 5.

So I came here and found THG’s ISO. I downloaded it, burned it to a CD, booted it on the Optiplex 780 and used it to prepare my CF card. From this point the CF card booted and finished the ROS 5.0 beta 2 installation process. The system then rebooted successfully to the login prompt. 5.0 beta 2 has the correct drivers for my NIC and I was able to use Winbox on my desktop computer to connect to the Optiplex system and configure ROS.

So based on this information I would say it may be worth investigating further a potential bug/problem with ROS 5.0 and x86 platform.

Thanks, THG.

Good to know that it also helped someone else, and thanks for the karma.

Colebert , you are certainly right;

I was saying this at “viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40526” but I could not get any solution, thanks for info.

Netinstall 5.x is not compatible with CF & x86 platform, there is a bug.

Regards.

what you mean by not compatible? Router boots from netinstall but no harddrives found?

I can’t get a CF card prepped with NetInstall 5.0 to boot in an x86 system and install. I had to use that boot CD to prep the CF card.

Netinstall 4.9 worked just fine but so what? No drivers for my NIC.

I have installed in VMWare 4.X a couple of time via 5X netinstall works fine…

CHOOSE IDE drive mode NOT SCSI…

SCSI mode will result in no hard drives found…

Downloads so far. :open_mouth:

Where is my karma? :unamused:

Hi janisk;

it’s mean,

if I prepared a CF card via NetInstall 5.0, my x86 board is not starting after BIOS startup which is alix6e2

if I prepared a CF card via NetInstall 4.10, my x86 board is starting after BIOS startup and installing OS than comming password screen.

thanks.
