Is there any pro to run rOS into dual-OS switches when L3 features are NOT used ?
Or… is swOS ALWAYS the better choice when a “L2” switch is desired ?
Thanks.
RouterOS has much better access/management security. SwOS only supports HTTP with basic digest authentication, no TLS to protect data in transit, also no logging and configuration files contain admin password in plaintext.
IIRC the only SwOS feature which can’t be replicated in RouterOS is the port lock ‘Lock on First’ functionality.
SwOS should just go and die a slow death IMHO.
RouterOS also has many switch features that you won’t find on SwOS.
TBH, I see no reason to run SwOS, unless you have a really simple setup.
Setup is very simple, switch to switch sfp Vlan trunk , untagged Vlan ports for pc and ip phones, few tagged ports to APs, nothing more…
Should I go rOS anyway ?
I would agree with the others. Just having proper encrypted management access is enough to push me in the RouterOS direction. I also find having all sorts of router and VPN functionality, MVRP etc. really nice.
I wouldn’t exactly say take SwOS out the back and shoot it. I’d rather put in in marketing speak, as in “it doesn’t provide a value proposition that I would find especially appealing.”
Doesnt show up in winbox, and cannot open it in winbox… Finicky as shit when playing with access permissions…
