ROS on x86 - Backup Everything (system, config, license)?

I would like to know if it’s possible to back up the entire RouterOS install including the license on an x86 installation. I have a computer on which I was using for RouterOS but have swapped it out for an RB750. I want to use the computer for other things (perhaps Astaro or Untangle) but I don’t want to lose the RouterOS license, and I would also like to have the computer ready to go back in service with RouterOS should the RB750 fail (I lost one to lightning before adding lightning protection). Understand I am not trying to pirate RouterOS or do anything which is contrary to the terms of the license. I just want to use the machine for something else. If I didn’t live in the jungle of South America I’d run down to Best Buy and pick up another SATA hard drive and use that for the other OS. But I only have one drive so I’m looking at imaging the drive with RouterOS on it and keep that image safe. Should this work? Any advice would be appreciated.

You can’t backup the license or move to another disk (directly). You must to keep the hd if you don’t want lose the license.

Thanks. I understand what you’re saying. Just to be clear, I’m not trying to move the license to another drive, I’m trying to backup what’s there with the possibility of restoring it later to the same hard drive.

Greg

You can do backup binary and restore again on the router. But if the HD was formated to install another SO you lose the key.

You could try to create Acronis image of hard drive. It should work.

Thanks!

better use “/system license output” to save the key to a file, and then use “/export file=name” to save config in human readable form.

Thanks! Will that let me restore the license to the same hard drive at a later date? So I don’t have to backup the MBR and partition? Cool!

Greg

no, but it will give you proof of purchase. it will work only if after reinstall the SoftId will still be the same. If it’s not, you can send that key to support and ask for a replacement key

Cool! Thank you very much!
