I’ve just purchased a MikroTik Cap XL. when i look in Packages, i can see i’m using 6.49.7. But i’ve read the latest version is 7.x??
Have i bought an old AP that won’t take newer ROS versions?
Thanks
Colin

https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:License
All Licenses:
never expire
can use unlimited number of interfaces
are for one installation each
offer unlimited software upgrades
When you buy any computer with preinstaled software is this software always the latest fully patched version from the day of purchase?
My question is why did you purchase a cap XL???
Have you tried upgrading?
System - Packages - Check for updates
(Upgrade channel)
I read good reviews, is it not a good device??
I would appreciate you sharing any concerns you may have…
Thanks
Well of course i have looked in both RouterBoard and Packages and updated both, and the version i quoted in my original post is the upgraded version. However, these appear to be version 6.x and i read that 7.x is available. So I’m wondering a couple of thinks, have i bought outdated hardware that isnt capable of running the latest, or, are there different streams of code depending on the device type, i thought I’d read that all devices run the same R-OS?
Once you have the latest stable version on RouterOS v6, you should see under “check for updates” a channel called “upgrade”, change the channel to it, and then you will be able to install version 7 from it. Another option is just to download the version 7 RouterOS arm package from mikrotik.com/downloads by uploading the file and rebooting the device.
Thanks Guntis - i just found this ![]()

Is there a problem with it?
Not really. It’s just that it’s a generation old … the newest MT wireless devices are ax, e.g. cAP ax.
