The RB console needs to connect to a serial port, not an ethernet port. The confusion is that Cisco uses an 8P8C (aka RJ45) connector for the serial port on some of their products. This is usually done as a cable with DB9 on one end and RJ45 on the other. Or as a DB9 to RJ45 converter and a rollover cable.

If you have a ‘standard’ Windows desktop machine, there is likely a DB-9 male connector. That is a serial port. Connect that to the RB console using a null modem cable (or rollover cable with DB9 to RJ45 converters such that TX and RX are crossed as RB and PC are the same pinout.)

If you have a laptop, there is likely no connectorized serial port and you will need to use a USB to serial adapter or the laptop’s docking station to achieve a serial port.

Ok make it simple for me sir i just need to convert my rj45 link to usb and that should do it i am a total noob any other ways to go bck to the old firmware so i can re try uploading the firmware? cause finding a usb converter is going to take time..

When i connect routerboard lan to pc lan should i put static ip on the pc lan… ofcruse the console i am going to convert it to usb then in netinstall shuld i use the ip or dns to connect to the router… and then dial in with hyper terminal

netinstall in the wiki

Once you have the serial console communication working, follow the steps in netinstall.

my question was to get the communication between the router and pc i need to have console cable connected to the routers console port.. then usb connverter connected to pc’s usb port then one of the routers lan port connected to the laptops lan port. right?

then do i connect to the router via hyper terimnal 115200 1 8 none none… in netinstall what ip do i put in the boot from? do i put the static ip that i asign the lan port from pc connected to the router board?

3 down now tried to update one more it did the same it wont let me sniff again no i got three boards dead 532/411/433 this sucks hope i can fix them…

Yes.

Download PuTTY, you will like it compared to Hyperterminal. It supports serial ports in the latest versions.
When you boot the router, you should see the “Press any key in 2 seconds” message. If you see gibberish, the baud rate is wrong.

Assign your lan port a reasonable IP, e.g. 192.168.88.1/24. In the Netinstall Netbooting window, put something in that subnet, like 192.168.88.10.

I fixed most of the routers with net install over lan but i still can t get console working… i only have issues with 532’s now

To View images click url for more info on my problem..

i managed to upgrade 532 router board via winbox sucessfully i can also sniff the router board but when i try to login i get the above error messge

now i used the usb cable cd provided with it but i get this in my device manager so the com or port is not installed so that i can dial in to the router board

So basically i got two 532’s giving me issues…

one i can sniff can’t login the other is totally dead can t sniff into it at all it wont even dual beep so i can use netinstall to put os again on it..

These are the tools i have for console : http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/141/img2011120900014.jpg/

Maybe a stupid question, but did you install the driver before plugging the device into the usb port?

If so, unplug the usb, uninstall the device in device manager, run the driver CD then plug the usb device back in.

hey reverged i have tried that remove the usb device remove usb drivers re-install with the usb plugged in and then plug the usb but same thing..

Do you advise i just find a pc with a cosole port and use the console cable with console converter?

please advise

Just one observation about your usb to serial cable, it looks very much like those cheap crappy no-name devices from China. Open its properties in Device manager and check if it’s failing because of famous “code 10” error. If so, save yourself the trouble, throw it out of the window and get a branded one with support. It’s some kind of fake chips problem. Newer drivers simply refuse to work with them. With older drivers it sometimes works, but generally these devices are very bad, even if they seem to work, connection often freezes, etc…

SOB your right i got a original cisco Console cable with converter @ one end what to do the country i live in i can t find a better quality cable… so i guess only console to console pc can help me out @ this moment in time thanks sob.
