Hello, I’m looking for a router that supports IGMP snooping, RIP, BGP, multicast forwarding/routing.
I need to sent a 10 mbps multicast stream between my server (located in a datacenter) and another port in the same network.
I’ve been told to buy a 1000 dollars solution from another manufacturer with 4Gb RAM, 8G flash.
I’m not sure I need that advanced equipment.
Please recommend the right solution for me.
if you need to send multicast from one point to another, create dedicated vlan for this and stream it statically. Switches with disabled “igmp snooping” treats multicast as broadcast… If you still need full multicast L3 routing support (BGP, PIM-SM, MSDP) on the cheap, try “c3064” from ebay with enterprise licence…
The scenario is as follows: 10Mbps stream comes into the server (RTMP or SRT) in datacenter and then is sent out as10Mbps multicast (UDP) to a local port for access by cable operators.
Do I need a very powerful router to handle this?
I see. So you convert the RTMP to UDP packetized MPEG-TS or something like that. And you need the router to forward this over some Layer 3 infrastructure?
Server → Switch(multicast) → Router(unicast) → Switch(multicast).
yest, that’s how I want it to work. it’s a double stream (10 mbps in and 10 mbps out) at the same time. no big burden on the router, I think. At least for a wowza server it’s a piece of cake. but I have no idea what kind of router I need. I have no experience with multicast. I don’t know whether it should be a more advanced router (4 gb RAM, 8 Gb flash) like they tell me to buy or something else. What kind of specs I should be looking for.
