router not starting

Recently i bought an MAP2nd router.
Since it was my first time with a mikrotik i made some mistakes with the config and ended up with multiple factory resets however since yesterday the router doesn’t reteurn to factory reset.

  • What is did was an reset config > no defaults > load the “export verbose” script from earlyer that day.
after 5 minutes the device was not reteurned to its previouse state.
    power off
    pres and hold the button
restore (usb) power until the USR led starts flashing
release the button and wait for another minute

this was always working but now it didn’t
i tried multiple time also with other reset lengths
found somewhere the 30,30,30 reset. where you need to hold it for 30 seconds / power off 30 secondends / power on 30 seconds release the button.

also the netinstall isn’t working

  • set pc ip to192.168.88.254/24
    start netinstall
select net boot and set ip to 192.168.88.3
direct connect the router to the pc with a known working cabel (also tried another)

is there anything else i can do or is it simply bad luck?

Does the box have a reset pinhole button anywhere?

To do Netinstall make sure that you not have enabled virtual interfaces or another physical interface on your computer.

Regards.

Don’t follow the manual on this, it is completely wrong

Set ip to 192.168.88.1 instead and netinstall will work

Can’t resist, did you put gas in it??

Seriously, there is variation on how models are set to net install mode, it may be the issuel.
(how long you hold the reset button etc…)

Dont agree

The netinstall is a bootp server and will assign range you configure. I have been using range 192.168.1.2 in bootp client config on netinstall for years and no issues

There are other things you need to look at when using netinstall, i.e. check the network connection profile, should be private and not public, etc

In my case with all RouterBOARDs using manual step by step without any modification except considering that I said, never I had problems.

Regards.

Thanks for your reply.
i finaly found some time for testing and found the first part of the problem.

On my computer was WSL installed wich create Hyper-V network interfaces. Disable wasn’t enough. i needed to uninstall.
After this (And a reboot) the netinstall showed a device.
At packages i selected the most recent package, selected “apply default config”
When click on install the status shows install for a split second. after this the status keeps empty for 2 seconds and returned to ready.

As you can expect the router still isn’t working.
what is the change that we get this up and running? or should i return it to the shop?

The problem is on your side, not the Mikrotik device

Since the device pops up in netinstall, firewall, etc is ok and network connection profile also.

copy the .npk file into same folder as netinstall.exe
Make sure you laptop/pc doing netinstall from is in same IP range as per boot IP address in netinstall, i.e. set pc to 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
Start netinstall.exe with “Run as Administrator”
then in net booting config in netinstall, enable boot server and set 192.168.0.2
do the press reset button process to get the device to show in netinstall
click on device and select the package in correct folder, i.e. the one in same folder as netinstall.exe

Found something strange. the router was requesting an ip on the Eth2 . via this ip i found a page telling me the device was managed bij capsman.
here there was an option to factory reset.

This didn’t explain why all other reset methodes didn’t work.
How did i get it to “capsman” mode. and does this prevent any form of factory reset?

Reset button has various functions depending how long you press it during reset process.

Something like 5 seconds for factory reset, 10 seconds for metinstall and 15 seconds for capsman, can’t remember the details but all described in wiki article
