I am a bit new to this area so if this is a really dumb question please forgive me! I am thinking of buying a Routerboard 532 kit for testing purposes. When I have purchased the hardware, and turned it on running RouterOS, how do I configure it? It has no VGA port.
For CLI connect to the serial port via Null modem cable.
For Windows (Winbox) you need a copy of winbox.
There are several ways to get winbox.
connect your router via Xover cable to a laptop, set the laptop to an address on the same subnet as the router, brouse to the routers ip address and down load it from there.
2)Connect to the demo router over at MikroTik and download it from there and the connect the router to your network (watch for conflicting IPs) and connect to the router via MAC (click on the button to the right of the address text box and a list of devices will show)
3)I belive it is available on the download page at mikrotik.
In short there are several ways to get winbox… just GET IT and configure the router via a windows GUI..
You can use the serial cable to run the setup command, and simply answer the questions.
This should get you up and running enough to tweek the config using the winbox utility.
I have had success with using 10.10.10.1/24 on a new router board using winbox, without having to use the serial cable.
I do not know if this is a default config from the company I perchased it from however.
I’d suspect this was a default config from the guys you got your systems from…
A “clean” RouterOS install does come without any ip addresses. But the “/setup” command should get your running for the first step quickly.
You could also consider buying an old VT serial dumb terminal for router configurations.. I just can not remember if they support the default baud rate of 115200.
