Last week my company was rolling RouterOS updates to clients running on various different Routerboard products.
After updating many older units they need a license upgrade within 24hrs. Normally this is not an issue, but do to a very sudden family emergency I was called away. Do to the emergency my mind wasn’t really focusing on the state I left a few units in. About 3 units were rebooted with the new RouterOS but the licenses were never updated. As a result the boards halted 24 hrs later.
All three units were used wireless clients (ie. outdoor sealed and on roof tops, towers, etc.), it is in the middle of winter here so accessing the units is undesirable if there are other methods of repair. Unfortunately becuase of the halt it is impossible to fix the Routerboards without access to the serial port.
All I want is to suggest that when a Routerboard is halted do to license expiry, upon reboot (ie. power cycle), the board automatically attempts to boot from ethernet prior to NAND. This would allow netinstall’s to be preformed without having to use the serial port to set the board to attempt an ethernet boot.
Cheers
