Hello,
i’ve made a small comparision against the units above.
Scenario: two HP servers (DL380G5 and DL380G6) connecting with a single gigabit.
doing iperf between them (~950mbps one way or 930+850mbps two way)
Routerboard put into the middle as a bridge with and without bridge firewall/conntrack/simple queue
1100AH (overclocked to 1500mhz) starting at ~50% cpu load (without bridging firewall)
1100AHx2 more than 60% on a single cpu (without bridging firewall)
CCR1036 ~1% (without bridging firewall)
enabling ip firewall on both 1100 boards raised the cpu by ~10%
sadly 1100AHx2 routes all the load to the same CPU, so it’s badly outperformad simply by the overclocked 1100AH
CCR1036’s CPU usage cannot be raised above 5%. even with decreasing the packet size from 1500byte to 576 byte. and set simple queue to 99M/99M or 400M/400M - does not take sense.
1100 board run with ROS5.18 and CCR1036 with 6.0rc6
Conclusion: if you want to do any CPU sensitive job with more than 100mbps traffic, the +50% difference on CCR1016 worth every cents.
Did you check the load on the individual cores of the CCR? Does the load get balanced over multiple cores?
I ask this because it’s possible that the CCR shows just 1-2% total CPU load but one core is at its limits and you can’t route more traffic even though it looks like the CPU load is low if you don’t look at the individual cores.
I’m pretty sure you’re aware of this but just to make sure…
no, sadly did not checked individual cores. I had to give back the testing unit. But when one of my other friend got delivered his one, we would make another test for that.
However, you know that current firmware version does not do balancing for firewall between cores so maybe i even could not test this currently?
On the other side, i think the bottleneck is not the performance, but with the hardware and software support for Mikrotik.
It seems, that Mikrotik handles CCR as a flagship (or a messiah product) and all support forces do fixing on this one and that causing many other tickets to even NO REPLY…
Also, CCR can run only ROS6 what is RC. I’m not sure that is essential for trusting it as a core router if you have any other chance…
