Has there ever been any thought to building a RouterOS device onto a PCI-e form factor?
My thought is that there could be many use case scenarios for such a device. Possibly a 4-port router built right into your server or having the ability easily to embed a WiFi access point into a PC. The idea of having an embedded hardware firewall on my computer is very attractive especially when that firewall has the ability to negotiate VPN connectivity that is independent of anything happening on the computer that it is connected to.
As a natural extension on this idea, having the card present itself as a network adapter and a serial port to the system could greatly simplify interfacing and management on the the host PC but not strictly required depending on the application.
Possibly have a base unit with one network device presented to the local PC and a single network interface presented at the bracket where it mounts onto the PC. Then have optional daughter boards similar to how the RB800 worked that would allow additional Ethernet ports or WiFi capability.
