Hi
I am new to routerboard and routerOS and I would like to build my own router
I can see that there are quite a lot of boards to select from but I am having some
questions which restricts me for going forward.
If someone can answer me those questions so I can go ahead and build my routerboard
I would appreciate it.
Wifi Questions with some of my comments
a) I would like to have concurrent 2.4 and 5G n networks. Is it possible?
I think I can get a routerboard with 1 embedded wifi and add one more wifi of 5G in the SODIMM socket
or I can get a board with at least 2 SODIMM sockets.
b) I know that for N networks we can use MIMO so we need multiple antennas (chains).
What are the available configuration scenarios here?
I see that each wifi card has 1 or two antenna outputs so how to I connect them to the case?
c) I assume that all cases have 3 output for antennas? Is it true? Are there boards with 2 or 4?
d) Lets assume I have a 2.4 and 5G wifi cards. How do I configure which antenna will go to each external antenna connector?
e) Is the MIMO feature for each card enabled in RouterOS since we are restricted by the number of antennas?
Other questions
a) I see boards with 32M of memory up to 512MB? How much do I need?
Can you give me some bandwidth scenarios for more memory?
For example concurrent IP connections, users, ip filtering for going from 32M to 64M or 128M or 256M
You will have MIMO 3x? @5GHz .11ac and 2x? @2.4GHz .11n.
Also you can purchase this board: http://routerboard.com/RB922UAGS-5HPacD
with same card, 4 antennas and a case from mikrotik/other company (good drill included). For 2 channels at 5GHz/2.4GHz.
There is no any case for 4 antennas. There is no any 3 channels device except outdoor ap. Just wait for new releases or buy usual home router like asus as access point and connect it by ethernet to mikrotik router like CCR(to correct cpu’s port)/RB1100/RB850x2/Archived top-router.
Hi. I would use one of these (http://routerboard.com/RB493G) as a board for experimentation. Two caveats: the Mikrotik case only has three holes for antennas, and the usb ports are not powered. If you can work with those two limitations, it’s an excellent and flexible piece of hardware you can use to learn the system. Get two mini-pci radios, four antennas, a power supply, and an enclosure of some type.
I was thinking something like that.
Now if I get the mikrotik case I would have to open an extra hole for the 4th antenna. Are there other cases
outside of microtik that supports 4 antennas?
Now lets assume I get two minipci wifi cards the question here is which one to get
I assume I will get one for the 2.4G and one for the 5G but I think there are minipci cards with 2 antenna connectors or 1 antenna connector.
I know some routers have 2.4 anf 5G on one antenna same with wifi cards. Is there a antenna mixer connector?
Can I configure the wifi cards to send the signal from 1 connector or both?
How do I come up with the 3 external antennas if the wifi cards have 4
Thanks
Buy two radios: http://routerboard.com/R52Hn
Buy four antennas: http://routerboard.com/ACSWIM
One radio will operate at 2.4 and the other radio at 5Ghz.
You’ll need a third-party enclosure to cleanly mount all four antennas. Also, keep in mind that the radio cards/cables add length and height to the board.
