I would like to share my experience. I upgraded from 7.16.2 to 7.18.1. After the upgrade my 5Ghz download speed dropped from about 1Gb/s to ~400Mb/s. (I noticed a change so I measured with LibreSpeed Speedtest.) Also, most of my personal computers started to connect via 2.4Ghz instead of my 5Ghz network. (They have the same SSID.)
I have two hAP ax^3. All before/after observations and testing were performed using the same endpoints, which where located in the same places in my home. (Example: Personal laptop while seated on my sofa and work laptop while seated at my home desk.)
I downgraded back to 7.16.2 and everything is back to normal. I’ll sit tight for a while for the dust to settle.
Something doesn’t add up here.
You can not get 1Gb over wifi on AX3 ?
I can (almost) on wAP AX but that one is able to use 160MHz wide channels which AX3 can not do (80MHz max).
Are you sure the frequency which has been selected after upgrading to 7.18.1 is usable by all your computers and it is interference free ?
The same frequency is being used when running on 7.16.2 ?
For correct comparison, those settings have to be the same.
I noticed the same thing too, I didn’t change the 5 GHz channel and it happens also with the hAP ax that I use as a cAP.
Usually clients would get around 800 Mbps, now they don’t get above 400 Mbps without any configuration changes and using the same channel.
I will try downgrade to 7.17.2…
A curiosity, have you also configured “Max TX Power” for the 5 GHz?
Is the same SSID used on both ax3 as well as on both bands? If so, on your computer switch WiFi off for ten seconds then on again.
I have an ax3 which is running 7.18.1 with 960 Mb/s typical at the moment, with a couple of people active on it.
I noticed when I upgraded from 7.18 that speed dropped to 400 Mb/s, because while disconnected from the ax3 the computer connected to the more distant ax2 on the same SSID, with distance reducing speed, hence the need to drop and reconnect to pick up the right one. Signal does not drop far enough for the computer to bother transitioning unprompted.
I am not thinking this is probably the problem, but the symptoms are the same.
Edit to add: In my case I have not changed default power setting.
You can not get 1Gb over wifi on AX3: Screenshot enclosed. This is what I’m used to with 7.16.2.
Same frequency: For sure. I manage my config with an Ansible playbook and I verified with WebFig.
I’m joining this club as well. My AP is cAP ax, has been working almost 1 year without any issue, had been using v7.14.x (don’t recall exactly, but guessing x=2?) previously for long time, connection was really stable - weeks without any disconnection or drop, upgraded to v7.18.1 3 days go and from that timepoint I can see often random disconnections (logged like “@wifi1 disconnected, connection lost” or “@wifi1 disconnected, not responding” - reported signal strength always between -60 and -82).
I’ve been using “Antenna Gain”=5 for long time accidentally (forget it after my experiments in summer last year), discovered again after upgrade to v7.18.1 (when I started to fiddling with the random drops), removed that but it didn’t help either…
If nothing else significantly helps, I’ll be forced to downgrade one by one released version… v7.14.x is so old in my eyes (almost 1 year) but…
Edit: Just discovered v7.18.2 released recently, provided:
v7.8.12 has been released with rather vague “wifi - improved stability for wifi interfaces”. Considering how quickly this has been released, suggests there was a problem?
After testing of v7.18.2 I had to switch back to the version, I’m confident enough because I don’t have much time to make experiences in a production now.. - that’s v7.14.3 in my case where any wi-fi connection is rock stable (on both bands - 2.4G and 5G).
In seems there is some serious recent regression in wi-fi code because even v 7.19beta still announces vague ‘improved wi-fi stability’ but as reported by others, still not stable enough…
Does anybody know if some older that v7.18.x but newer that v7.14.x is stable (regarding WiFi) as expected?
