First post, don’t have anything yet. I just heard of Mikrotik 2 days ago, did some online browsing and I’m ready to ask questions. About MikroTik and RouterOS, I don’t know ANYTHING yet. But I need to before I buy something.
I’m a Linux guy and a software developer. So I’m coming from the perspective of IT and setting up a network for use with software development.
I looked at the 1036 routers from routerboard, and they look pretty good. The thing is, the boards this router is based on look even better, I mostly have interest in 10gbe. So can RouterOS run on a plain old Linux box with a Tilera GX36 or GX72 board on it?
Other questions regarding RouterOS: Is this the zero overhead linux the Tilera site talks about with some extras added on, or is it something else? What comes with it? Does it have a development environment on it? Can I put one on it?
My original intent in researching this was to set up a couple virtualization hosts and put high speed networking on them. I also need a pretty sophisticated (for a small network) topology, and only a handful of 1gbe hosts.
Now I wonder how robust this Tilera processor is, and whether I can just use a few of those as my VM hosts? How do I get docs on these processors? I sent a request to Tilera but they haven’t responded yet.
