Hi, I am setting up my hAP that I bought from amazon and I am trying to learn the MkroTik system. My aim is to set up a local data collection system of walled garden type that can be used in teaching, patient feedback etc. The system components would be a linux server on laptop and a hAPL router; when I am done I plan to share the exact setup details on github so they can be replicated by other medical researchers interested in making use of this.
My question is this: There are a few training videos available on how to install RouterOS on a virtual machine - and I have installed latest RouterOS on VirtualBox on linux. However the system warns me that I have 24 hours for activating with a key. My query then is - how one can easily set up a VM learning environment without worrying about the licence key? Is the only way to buy a separate key from my already purchased router?
Do not use the ISO for the Virtual Machine. Use the CHR image instead. The CHR image has no license keys, and can be used in limited speed mode (1Mbit) forever, or in unlimited mode for up to 60 days (afterwards, no more upgrading, although the system will continue to work).
Thank you, that was a breeze; very helpful, it is up and running. So with this image I get the same routerOS and I can work with it in the same way - SSH or web based or WinBox too?
