routerOS licence ?

Hello.

Im new to networking and especialy in mikrotik, i dont know if its the right section for that.
I wanna buy mikrotik for my home and for practice.

model : MikroTik hAP lite (RB941-2nD-TC), it says that coming with routerOS L4 but im reading that i need to buy licence… so if i buy that AP i have to buy licence to ? is that router coming with the device free trial ? else when i have to buy licence for a device ? only for upgrading to new routerOS ? thanks.

Full licence is included with device, you don’t need to buy it extra. Future upgrades are also free. You’d need to buy new licence only if you’d want higher level (L5, L6), but there’s no way you’d need it for this little device, because they only have higher limits for number of VPN clients and such. But even L4 has high enough limits for them.

Any mikrotik hardware chimes with its license. You only need to buy for x86 or chr.

x86 is for setting a pc for being router etc?

Yes. It is not that popular any more because it lacks drivers for newer hardware (NICs, disks, …). Nowadays it’s more popular to run CHR, which is essentially x86, but running as VM letting hypervisor to deal with bare hardware and utilizing virtualized resources … modern x64 machines are powerful enough so that performance drop due to VM overhead is not critical.

You can download VM disk images for CHR which include trial license. If you decide to unleash full power, you have to purchase appropriate license.
