RouterOS versions?

Hi all

Probably a really stupid question, but I’m looking at the RB750 and note it runs ROS 3, but ROS4 is available? I can’t find any comparison/matrix between the two versions and wonder if the features I need are in OS3?

I’m looking for the following at a min:

  1. HotSpot with local auth
  2. Radius support
  3. Support for UserManager so I can manage a HotSpot users

Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers
Lea

The closest thing available are the changelogs.

What you’re trying to do also works on 3.x for those features, but 4.x contains bugfixes and improvements.

In short, should you encounter any issues you’ll be asked to upgrade to the latest revision anyway - in my mind, it’s best to start with the latest stable on new deployments and to continually bench test new versions.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I note that all the RouterBoards are Os3, so can they be simply updated to 4? If so is there a step by step guide? I’m not a Linux guru so that would be much appreciated.

RouterOS doesn’t really expose you to Linux at all. The manual is on the wiki, it contains answers to all common questions.

suitably embarrassed (thanks for the link), but will the 750 license allow an upgrade for free? It sounds like a major increment (3 to 4 ) and often these are fee based?

You can look at the output of “/system license print” (or navaigate to that section in Winbox) to see what version you are eligible to upgrade to.

You can definitely go to 4.x - and that reset the license and enables you to go to 5.x When downloading the software make sure to read all notices on that page, 4.x did change licenses so you need to follow the instructions on the download page to upgrade your license.

Thank you for all your assistance, much appreciated.

If a free upgrade is possible I’m surprised that they are not already supplied with 4, is there a reason do you think?

Thanks again
Lea

When they were manufactured, the newest version was v3, that’s why.

Upgrade is simple, FTP the new files and reboot.

Cheers. I have located Gregg Sowell’s site http://gregsowell.com/?page_id=304 - (Brilliant and thanks Gregg) so being a Windoz man will use WinBox…

2 x RB750s on order and hopefully I’ll receive them in a couple of days… it’s it wrong to be quite so excited
