RouterOS x86 instalation help

Hi all,

I’m a PfSense long time user and since I’m currently having some driver issues with PfSense I wanted to give MikroTik RouterOS a try due to the friendly business model.

I’ve been struggling a great deal to have this installs on a machine.
For my surprise, it seems that RouterOS doesn’t support being installed from a USB Bootable drive, when using the CD ISO, since it looks like it’s hardcoded to look for a CDRom, something that is mind boggling to me in 2018.

After that I’ve tried without success to use PxE, but I didn’t manage to get it to work.

Is it me, or the ONLY way to install this dam thing is to have the HDD for the router connected to another machine with Windows and using the NetInstall App?
I have other machines but not running Windows, the only machine running Windows is my Laptop, so it’s really annoying this stupid specific requirement.

The instructions are fairly poor in the Wiki, so any guidance and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Ralms.

So I’ve managed to get an external disc enclosure to install RouterOS.

My system is a Windows 10 laptop.
I’ve went to the Download site and downloaded NetInstall and RouterOS 6.41.2 (Current) x86 Main Package.

Formated the drive and NetInstall detects it. I select the folder where the package is, select the drive and the package and do Install.
NetInstall takes 2s and it’s done. It seems too fast, but since the package is just 19MB, I can understand.

After that I grab the disk and try to boot from it on my machine and nothing.
My router is a Asus N3150 with a Intel ET2 Quad and 8GB Ram (I read that RouterOS only uses 2GB, don’t really understand why but ok).

The lack of proper documentation on how to install this OS is really throwing me off into buying this to be honest.

Anyone can help me please?

Thank you.
Ralms.
