RS232 to Ethernet Imlementatin

Dear everybody.

I was wondering if there is any way to setup a router (let’s say a RB433 for example) for RS232 remte conection through any known program for comversion. It should allows us to connect to a Virtual COM port in a PC and then be transmitted by IP to the remote RS232 in the Routerboard.

I think you know what I am trying to do. Exemys for example, has a set of converters for RS232 to Ethernet and vice versa. Those converters are expensive for certain applications and usually need for a router too! so your cost is a bit raised up in some cases.

I am completely sure that this is a very interesting application for the RS232 port in Routerboard.

I will be looking forward to seeing any response.

It is very useful. However, I would like to know if I can send binary data through serial port given that device connected to RS232 port is not ASCII based.

On the other hand, I would need to use the propietary software that is intended for the device at issue. Such software uses COM port in the PC, so I would need to make a conversion or installing a software to make an adaptation between a virtual COM port and the special-logging in the remote router.

I do not pretend you to design a solution for me, I’m just thinking there is already a well know solution for this but I have not known it!

Thank you again.

yes, see /port remote-access. you can use rfc or raw mode. it should do what you want. I’ve used it many times.

This is very interesting…
Now I would like to go one step further. I want to configure two RB411 (or so) so, that they act as an RS-232 extender. So that what’s sent on one side on RS-232 is received on the other side on RS-232 and vice versa. As transparent as possible, automatic without login. Is this possible?

Rgds,
Reg

is there a windows driver that can take advantage of that  A RS232 to IP box costs about $50,- so if I could get my weather station “online” by paying $10-$20 for a driver for windows (or even free) i would be happy

See this excellent wiki info:

there are free windows ones out there… vsp I believe.

thanks. off to test!

btw i do prefer a good book vs a number of wiki pages - but maybe that is just me.

I would happily pay for a beginners book in e-book format i could read/skim to have a better overview of the potential of Router OS. Unfortunately the only book available is hardcover/print on demand.
