Self building network - WDS

Hello everyone,
this post would be a discussion about the possibility of making a self building network using the WDS feature.
What I mean is:

  1. I sell to my customers a CPE which supports many WDS connections (3-4 not more);
  2. in a city not all places are reached by my wireless network, because of I’m using 5Ghz, there are a lot of buildings and not everyone can see my wireless points of distribution;
  3. in any case what I would do is a network which is present in every single corner of the city because of I’m selling a service which is a sort of timed connection for everyone who wants to connect everywhere (for example internet access at 1€/1hour).

Now what I think is:

  1. every time I sell a CPE to a new customer I setup 2 or 3 WDS conections to other CPEs, and so, every time I sell a CPE I cover in deep the area on which the CPE is sold.

On a little city (20.000 citizens) with 50/60 CPEs I could obtain the complete coverage of the city.
Of course everyone share the same bandwidth, but it could be enough to get an acceptable internet connection speed and in any case, for customers whose want more bandwidth, I can set differently their CPE.

At the end I could get a bridged network with 100/200 customers (like a switched company network).

What do you think?
Any experience like this one?

Any suggest is welcome.

Alessio

Don’t think it would work. First of all some customers would have several hops to the internet. Second, all the AP’s would have to operate on the same channel, giving a lot of noise everywhere.

You wouldn’t be able to provide any QoS and you would experience serious complains from paying users :slight_smile:

If you want to cover more and be able to have more AP’s you maybe can use what we’re doing.. We offer free Internet to those people we see can cover an area with an AP where we have nothing. Then we connect it to our backbone and are able to sell our services in that area as well.
