Serial Console connected, but no response visible

Hi Folks,

I’m owning two MT Routers, RB2011 and RB3011.
I have connected the serial console with a Cisco DB9/RJ45 console cable via USB/Serial adapter to a USB Port of my ESXi server and forwarded the adapter to a Win10 VM.
With the RB2011 I’m able to connect to the serial console. (115200 8N1 no flow control) With Putty/Kitty. After connection I have to press a key and will get to the login prompt. From that point it works like a Terminal in Winbox.

With the RB3011 I dont see any response, means the putty window remains black. But the connection is established, because I can login by typing ‘admin’ and 2x. This successfull login is shown in the router log. But still Putty window remains black. i’m typing blind. Even if I type /system reboot y, the device reboots. So connection is okay. I’m using the identical Putty config as I’m using with the RB2011. Only difference is, that the RJ45 plug is connected to the RB3011. I also have reset the RB3011 to factory defaults with and without standard config. Without success.

Any idea why I can’t see any output from the RB3011 in my Putty window?

Make sure that your console port of your RB3011 is configured with the correct parameters. I searched a bit on Internet about cables that works and I found that original Cisco console cable (DB9F - RJ45M) works.

It could be that connections in 3011’s RJ45 console port are flakey and that pin 3 (TxD) does not properly connect to the RJ45 connector (assuming the very same Cisco serial console cable works fine in case of RB2011). Making serial connection one-way only (from PC to router).
