Server configuration suggestion?

Hello all!

What would a computer configuration be, in order to support the Mikrotik router with trafic shaping and bandwidth limiting implemented?

I had configured it on a PI at 266Mhz with 64Mb RAM but if I implement band-limiting queues the computer seems to grind to a total and disastruous halt. Does it need more processor speed, memory…?

Many thanks,
Radu

It all depends  Did you check system resources for clues? What bandwith, how many connections, NAT or not, etc etc

I run traffic shaping & firewalling on a Soekris Net4501 which is a 486 class machine with 64MB RAM. CPU useage is about 10% with 45MB free memory.

Not loading modules you don’t need will help.

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply.

I did check my system resources and the CPU load stays at about 10%, memory used is about 30Megs and hdd is 95% free. My network has about 100 customers and I have a 800kbps bandwidth and I use NAT. When I use queues, processor usage goes up to 80%. That should, in my opinion, still be fine, but the router becomes virtually non-accesible. That is why I am puzzled.

It is also possible that I do not use the queues smartly, but there is little one can do wrong with the Mikrotik as I just add a rule for a certain ip to be cut down to, say, 32kbps.

So, I am still without a clue.

I found that problem too and upgrading to a more powerfull PC helps dramatically.

I found the CPU and RAM was never loaded according to the stats but winbox runs so slow you know something is wrong!!

I found 1 GHZ with 128meg ram is what is needed to run queues and queue tree. I have around the same number of users as you state.
