not sure which way to go with the setup or connecting the 2nd tower to the first tower??
will be using a separate wireless card to connect to new tower as the
same on the new tower now do i bridge the two together as a point to point
and the other cards will be for the clients
or to use the wds setup as in the doc’s
or as the sample in wiki the wireless repeater??
as i don’t want to interrupt our current clients just yet need to try the setup first that it is working fine then we will go down for that short while to setup the tower
It all really depends on what you expect out of your links. For backhauls I use wds and just make them into transparent bridges connecting two towers together. For my backhauls I do p2p.
Definately use a second wireless in each unit and link the sites as PTP with WDS or Nstream as appropriate.
I prefer to use a hybrid bridging/routing model, this gives more flexibility to expand than a purely bridged model.
I have my PTP links bridged using 10.254.x.x/16 addresses, I use the third octet as a primary location indicator and the fourth octet as a secondary location inidicator, e.g. the third octet is different for each major transmitter site and the fourth for any subsidiary sites connected to the major site.
I then allocate different address ranges at each site, using a mixture of static routes and OSPF/RIP to propage all the routes.
It’s more complex to setup, but well worth it.
If you purely bridge, you may find yourself having to do a major renumbering at some point. You really need to plan for growth at the outset. I inherited a WISP which was poorly planned initially with no thought to future growth and its a real pain having to renumber.
