I work for a very small ISP that is currently using mikrotik to do all our routing. We use PPPoE to give our clients an IP and internet access. We also do a little colocation. We’d like to provide our customers with the ability to monitor their traffic usage for the month/day/year/whatever. We’ll probably need to use a solution that can sniff traffic since we’d want to filter out traffic that stays within our ip space. Also, we need something that supports user accounts too.
Ideally we’d just like the user to log in and be able to see a tables of daily and monthly usage. Very simple.
I’ve looked at mrtg and cacti and prtg. prtg seems to come the closest since it actually shows the traffic usage and not just graphs as mrtg and cacti seem to, but maybe there is something simplier? What are other people using? What are the big ISPs using?
I’d welcome any insight,
Thank you in advance,
jeff
Great, thanks jowi007. I’m not entirely clear on how to interface with a RADIUS server exactly.. does mikrotik generate accounting info per PPP account, or per IP (we’d need both I suppose).
In any case, we’ve decided that for now we can get away with a box between the router and the ISP sniffing all the traffic and running PRTG.
