simple wep on a 153

Hello,
I’ve purchase a 153 board and installed 3 prism cards . I have set them up as three independent ap’s and successfully communicated with all three (unit will power a 17dbi tri-sector antenna). Now all I want to do is implement simple wep encryption on the three interfaces but there doesn’t seem to be any clear directions on this in the manual (I found wpa2 and wpa but not simple wep) . The end result is for any client to associate to the ap and having the correct wep key connect to the net. And yes I know about the vulnerabilities of wep but it’s not a concern right now. Any takers? Meanwhile I’ll keep looking…

please look at this example for WEP configuration. You can alsoconfigure in the Winbox (just look what arguments that you need to change).

from the manual:
Prism card doesn’t report that the use of WEP is required for all data type frames, which means that some clients will not see that access point uses encryption and will not be able to connect to such AP. This is a Prism hardware problem and can not be fixed. Use Atheros-based cards (instead of Prism) on APs if you want to provide WEP in your wireless network.

Now, I use a varied assortment of embedded router boards from different vendors and some use non-propreitary software. For instance I have a few soekris boards running pebble linux derivatives and loaded with prism cards. They all recognize wep and work fine. So we seem to have reach somewhat of a conundrum here as there doesn’t seem to be any problem for wireless-tools in linux to utilize wep for prism based cards. So what are we missing here?

It says “some” devices can’t see that the AP “asks” for WEP. It doesn’t say prism cards don’t work with WEP.

Use Atheros-based cards (instead of Prism) on APs if you want to provide WEP in your wireless network.

soekris/prism isn’t so picky..
