could someone recommend me a small PoE switch (5-8 ports, 100M or gigs) which is able directly deliver power to the following devices without any additional injectors/converters ?
I’m using a Ubiquiti Toughswitch for these kinds of devices (RB911s, Rockets and some 802.3af converters).
It seems switching the passive PoE output on the Toughswitch to 48V does work with some 802.3af devices - although I cannot guarantee it won’t break things.
Of course this only works on the 8 port Toughswitch - as the 5 port one can only output either 24V or 48V.
It may be a challenge to find even a mid-span device that outputs both 802.3af (your camera) and Passive PoE (RB433) directly, let alone a switch. Not that it isn’t a good idea–I’m sure plenty of MT users also have ‘3af’ devices on their networks–I just haven’t seen it done.
As dreamind stated, Ubiquiti’s TOUGHSwitch PoE PRO (TS-8-PRO) is great for scenarios where you need both passive 24V PoE and 802.3af. We have several TS-8-PRO unites in use with a huge mix of PoE devices from MikroTik, Ubiquiti, HP, Cisco and Vivotek. Never had a single problem.
If you need to rackmount a TOUGHSwitch you can either get the carrier edition (just two TS-8-PROs that come factory installed in a rackmount frame) or buy a third-party bracket/frame. The ones we’ve been buying came from RF Armor, not sure if they’re actually the same as the one that comes with the TOUGHSwitch carrier kit.
The only real downsides to the TS-8-PRO is the small number of ports and the fact that it gets pretty hot when it’s powering a lot of devices. I definitely wouldn’t sandwich it between two other devices in a rack, not without some kind of active cooling anyway.
Now imagine if MikroTik made a rackmountable CRS with 802.3af and 24V PoE out…
Btw, the EdgeMax switches also look promising - although they are not yet available. But they only make sense, when you need more than 8 ports. What I don’t get about the ToughSwitch is, why Ubnt didn’t add a SFP port, so you could connect 2 ToughSwitches directly together, without losing PoE powered ports.
