SMS Alerts

 Have just installed 6 MikroTik WaveLan routers and loving it! Nice to have a stable network again…

Loving the Dude! It is providing more information than our older vendor driven application - nice to see the actual bandwidth between links.

Anyways, we have our own SMS modem and application that drives the modem to send out the SMS alerts.

Not knowing all that there is to know about the Dude, is there a conf file (W2K Server) that can be adjusted to point to the application that generates the SMS alerts?

Cheers,
Ryback

most telephone providers support sms over email. just send an email to the address 83247583247@sms.phone.com or something like that.

Uhh…Ok, maybe I should explain further.

The modem lives on another computer - legacy issues I have to deal with…

I would like to have the dude run the script that our other monitoring software can.

The alert flow is: Alert server (dude) → SMS modem application → SMS send via SMS modem on another server

I didn’t create this nighmare, just have to try and get things to “play” nice! :unamused:

You can make dude run external command with many different parameters as a
notification, perhaps you should setup a new notification.

i am just saying that you don’t need to use an sms modem for a simple thing as this. doesn’t your phone provider offer you sms sending per email? dude can already send emails. look at this problem from a different perspective

Not doubting that at all. Just that we have a “special” arrangment for this SMS modem - SMS’s hardly cost us a thing. So if I can use our modem for SMS alerts, it would be better.

Yeah, I’ll have to look at that - but I am unsure (gotta love being the n00b) of how to create the external command. Sadly, our department has three people off, so this has become a “back burner” project…but will still look at when I can.

Cheers for the suggestions guys, thanks.

Using the provider’s email to SMS gateway has proved slow and unreliable here in the UK. Using a modem to dial the provider’s TAP server has been 100% reliable for over a year and the SMS is received as the modem hangs up.

I’m not sure I exactly understand your setup but it sounds like you will need to setup a dude client on the machine that can dial the SMS modem, then use an ‘execute locally’ notification.

We have it set up this way at several of our clients. It’s pretty simple to do, but it depends on which application you are using to drive the GSM modem. If the application can trigger an SMS from the commandline, you can use The Dude’s external command feature, quite simple.

You seem to already have the GSM modem + software necessary, but If you need info about which app/modem to use, hit me offlist (andrea at air dot com dot mt) and I can give you a couple of names.

Note to Normis: Most clients want to monitor internet connection and their e-mail servers… if either of those is down, how can you send a notification to alert you that it is down? Using the GSM modem approach is quite foolproof as there are very few points of failure (apart from the GSM network itself, but if that fails, that becomes a national catastrophe…)

ok agreeed
