SMS Notification

I was wandering if there is anyway to have sms notifications from mikrotik.
If some device should be connected through a serial port like a premicell
maybe there are option to configure it to have sms in your cell phone.

Any one ever tried or knows?

Hi great idea, was looking into it myself. Currently I’m using email2sms but if my Internet link goes down… needless to say that I will never know until my users call. I’m also out here searching for something you just described.

Yes it is an option, a good one.
Hmm, this leads me to sth. else.
Let’s say we manage to configure MT to send email every 5min, in case the mail server doesn’t receive
an email from MT after 5min, could it generate a warning SMS?

I believe there is many ways to get this to work. But I know so little about MT as I have just joined the club. Your suggestion about the email server. It’s perhaps one way to monitor, and I would think a difficult one to configure. In your scenario what would you connect up to the mail server to send the sms messages? How about an PCMCIA card or something?

Yes a PCMCIA Card or a premicell. In my country the PCMCIA is not an option since it’s high cost per month (nearly 60$ per month fixed cost, plus usage). That’s why I am more keen on a premicell.
Anyway, it still would require MT to manage it, and I haven’t found any option.

As for the mail-server configuration,hmm there might be some option… I belive. need to check them, googling.

What if:

Another MT be setup to ping the first router and if he gets no reply then he sends a e-mail2sms.. ??

Use an online email2sms solution and have Dude do the emailing if a tower goes down…

not very familiar with Dude, does Dude has it’s own SMTP server?
actually I managed to send a sms through email2sms, and was going to post
the whole thing, the problem is with SMTP servers. Not every station has it’s own
SMTP server, so I tried Gmail enabling it’s filters for forwarding, but it didn’t work

I could email directly from Mikrotik to the email2sms online server, the problem
is it requires a SMTP server.

In my situation, as long as the ISP Line is up, it is ok, but when it goes down
the mail could not be send since the email server is inside the LAN. In this case
I asked the help of a friend of mine who runs a MT also, to ping my WAN IP and then
send an email when will discover it has gone down.

That’s how I’m figuring it out for now.

But, I stil think a device atached to the MikroTik itself with a sim card is always better.

i dont have much knowledge about MT but..
if You will attach a cel phone to MT thru a serial cable, will MT be able to send commands to phone thru some script?
Maybe this could be an option :slight_smile:

Cheap cell would cost You almost nothing, only to keep it working You would have to pay some mothly fee. :slight_smile:

I tried to do something similar with my linux box but dont remember if I succeded :stuck_out_tongue:

yes shaman, I’m talking about that, a cell phone or whatever SIM carrier attached to the serial port of the MT which could be managed.

Yes Driton, I surely looked at that, but doesn’t seem those devices can be handled by MT, or does they?

I guess you didnt read the manual :slight_smile: . You will just have to send AT commands to it through RouterOS serial terminal (_/system serial-terminal_) program and thats it. Just connect the GSM modem to the serial port of the router. I guess the device is little expensive but it solves the problem.

I see, than this needs the time to phurcase such a device and testing, after that we should be heard again. Or maybe before to be heard for assistence during testing if I find myself in trouble :wink:
