SOLVED: netinstall on LINUX can't connect, says "ERROR: gifaddr failed"

I upgraded my GrooveA 52ac from 7.13.3 to 7.13.4 today and it went into a boot loop upon the first reboot.

On Windows 11, I tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of netinstall, and neither one could even see the device.

Then, on two different LINUX machines (one running Debian 12.5 and the other running Ubuntu 22.04.3), I tried the LINUX version of netinstall, and it seems to detect the device, but as soon as it does, it says:

ERROR: gifaddr failed

and then exits to the command prompt.

I have not found any mention of what gifaddr failed means in regards to netinstall.

Also, the GrooveA 52ac is in a short, fast reboot loop that goes like this:

a) Power on by plugging in PoE injector
b) One LED comes on instantly–it’s the one closest to the N connector (5th bar of the Wifi level indicator). At the same time another LED flashes for a millisecond and goes off–that’s the power LED (furthest away from the N connector). I hear a slight click (not a normal beep) from the internal speaker.
c) The 5th bar LED stays on constantly. After several seconds, then power LED flashes even shorter than before such that it must be a fraction of a millisecond. I hear a tiny little click from the internal speaker. This step repeats over and over with about 30 seconds per cycle.

Any tips on how to un-brick this device?

Whoa, I just got it to work!

The only things I did were:

  1. Manually set the IPv4 address on the Ubuntu computer to 192.168.88.2/24 with gateway of 192.168.88.1
  2. I did NOT press the hardware reset button. The GrooveA 52ac just happened to be connected via Ethernet cable directly to the Ubuntu PC at the time and going through the rapid boot loop; I started the netinstall command, and it just happened to detect the GrooveA 52ac and started sending the routeros-7.13.4-mipsbe.npk image.

It seems to have succeeded in sending the image and rebooted the Groove on its own. I confirm that I can now get into WebFig at the address 192.168.88.1.
It does not look like the wireless-7.13.4-mipsbe.npk package is installed. Will have to manually install that now…

UPDATE: manual install of wireless-7.13.4-mipsbe.npk package worked fine; it is now installed. I am upgrading the firmware from 7.13.3 to 7.13.4.

UPDATE 2: The firmware update succeeded. I went to the Interfaces tab, saw that wlan1 was disabled, and enabled it. Strangely, no LEDs are lit at all on the GrooveA 52ac right now. I’ll do a factory reset of the config and see what happens to the LEDs. Ah! Resetting to the factory config and rebooting as required brought back the power LED, which now flickers as expected.

I expect it to work normally, now. This issue is solved (by accident).
