[Solved] Notepad++ alternative for Linux users?

Does anyone know of a Linux native app that could be used as a drop in alternative to Notepad++?

I’ve tried to install the snap version on a fresh Fedora install but it only initiates the Wine compatibility layer but the app itself fails to launch. Winbox 3 via snap works fine.

I’ll also want to use the language syntax with the Notepad++ alternative if pos too.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Is this really a MikroTik question?

P.S: I use nano or vi

Yet to try, but this looks to me as a superior solution: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=TIKOCI.lsp-routeros-ts

A common problem of “switchers”. You want to use Linux/macOS/any_other_os like Windows. No, it won’t work well. Use the OS where your habits and software are available and suits you best. If you like Notepad++ — just use Windows. E.g. nowadays me can’t use Windows because it counter-productive for me, I loss around 30% of productivity plus countless nerve cells. However, I used Windows including XP, then switched to Mac and never looked back (well, I looked, but after 1 hour of “looking” each new version I celebrated I don’t use Windows anymore :-). In the meantime I used a lot of Linux desktop distros. So, if you feel that Linux software or the concepts are not for you, e.g. you tried a week, a month and feel uncomfortable, just don’t.

As a straight reply I may recommend to look at Sublime. Many Linux users love it (but I cannot use because feel it uncomfortable). Also try to look at different IDEs. It’s not as lightweight as notepad, but… Maybe VS Code? But its plugins are super-buggy, personally I don’t recommend it, however a lot of popularity.

We are admins here, and everyone use what he likes the best, but on servers de-facto standard is vim/nano.

Fedora was always a “test site” for RedHat Enterprise Linux. So don’t expect much from this OS.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

Sublime it is, complete with MT syntax and compare side to side. Seems to work much better than Notepad++, especially when using WINE.

@normis, that’s why I posted under third party tools - not MT but a handy utility to use with rOS.

Cheers.

Thanks heaps for the detailed info. I was previously using Linux Mint Debian edition (deb12), however it seemed like Network Manager wasn’t prepared to play nice with L2TP configs so I opted for a distro with a faster updating schedule. I haven’t used Fedora before, and after doing a bit of digging decided to give it a go. So far, so good. I like it so far. Seems faster and less clunky. Having said that, I’m just in the process of downloading the latest Debian (13) live edition and will have a play with that too. Maybe Fedora will be a short stop over. Lol.
