[SOLVED] RB3011UiAS + USB 3.0 thumb drive

I’m unable to get any of my USB 3.0 thumb drives working, however USB 2.0 drives work just fine.
Symptoms:

  • Nothing appears on ‘disk print’

  • Nothing new appears on ‘system resource usb print’ (Only the host controllers, which are there all the time)

  • I’m running on 6.37.1

What I’ve tried:

  • Tried ‘system routerboard usb set usb-mode=force-host’ and also ‘automatic’

  • Reformatted and resized partition to 2GB. Tried FAT32 and ext3

  • Rewrote the MBR

  • Rebooted the device, power-reset, unplugging etc trivial things

Disks that work fine:

  • Four different USB 2.0 disks, sizes 4GB and 8GB

Disks that are not recognized:

  • Two different models (and two of each model) USB 3.0 disks, sizes 16GB and 128GB

The RB3011UiAS device is supposed to have USB 3.0 support, but even if it doesn’t it should fall back to USB 2.0 and disks should work fine. What could be the issue? Is there some compatibility list of working disks?

SOLVED: I have solved the issue. They provided me with a new router and it works. Probably previous one was just faulty.

Update:

I plugged the same USB drives to RB953GS (v.6.37) and also RB951Ui (v.6.37.1) and they worked great. I even tried formatting them on these devices and then plugged to RB3011, but RB3011 still doesn’t recognize them.
But this at least narrows it down to RB3011’s problem.

+1 I have the same problem, hope they can fix in a future update.

I use SanDisk Extreme CZ80 32Gb, RB3011 can detect it and work at 5000Mbps
I format ext3, upload via ftp avarage 5MB/s, download 30MB/s (80MB/200MB when plugin to pc).

Thats very interesting, thanks for posting. There must be some special difference, I tried with a Lexar JumpDrive S45 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - LJDS45-128ABNL and it wasn’t even recognized in USB or Disks areas of winbox. I will try with a 32GB USB3 drive and report back. Could it be simply about the size?

In my case, the drives were:
SanDisk Extreme 16 GB USB Flash Drive (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DZPUOTE/)
SanDisk Ultra Fit 128 GB USB Flash Drive (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00YFI1EBC)

As I said, I tried reformatting to smaller partitions and different filesystems, but nothing helped. Eventually I contacted Mikrotik’s support and after getting the supout.rif file, they asked me to send it to the warranty. I’m now waiting to hear back from them.

I just tried the same USB key on another RB3011, which is also running 6.37.1 and it works perfectly there.
So I believe that my other RB3011 is just faulty and I hope they will replace it soon.

Can you please test SMB transfer from Windows machine?
How is the CPU load..

I have a RB2011 and the speed is too low for any kind of NAS usage and CPU is 100%.. I know router is router and Fileserver must be a separete box..
But if the functionality is the why not use it in home enviroment (low power, File server for streaming video and backup target)

Sorry, this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

I have solved the issue. They provided me with a new router and it works. Probably previous one was just faulty.

I suspect there may be a batch of RB3011 with faulty USB.

Out of around 40 x RB3011 units we have deployed, 8 of them have unstable USB.

Does your read/write speed higher 30MB/s with USB 3.0 ?
