[SOLVED] RB951G-2HnD randomly reboots or stops responding

Hello,

Few days ago I’ve got new RB951G-2HnD. For a short while (less than one hour), after changing configuration a bit (SSID, WPA etc) it did work as expected, but then it started to behave quite strange:

  • randomly it kicks me off webfig (I see login screen) when doing nothing
  • reboots at irregular intervals - it could be 5 minutes or 20, even when there is no traffic and no WLAN connections
  • sometimes it doesn’t come up after power cycling (needs 2 or 3 cycles to recover)
  • sometimes, while in webfig, I couldn’t see any values in configuration - empty IP addresses and other values, while navigation is possible, shortly after that connection is gone
  • it simply stops responding, either over WLAN or ethernet
  • connected workstations can communicate but attempt to use webfig or ssh leads to reboot

I’ve tried default configuration only (using reset button) - it didn’t help, it still behaves oddly, even whet it is doing nothing (no WLAN connections, no traffic on ethernet - just idling system).

One thing which looks not normal to me - when I check “Resources”, value of “Total Sector Writes” is always reset after reboot or power cycle.

Another model which I use (751U-2HnD) works almost flawlessly, at least, no reboots or lost connectivity, with or without WLAN, so I doubt that this is a software related issue.

My question is - does it look like faulty hardware or problem might be somewhere else?

Thank you!

UPDATE: It seems that netinstall solved all problems. Probably, the upgrade process from 5.24 to 5.25 introduced some problems, or it was initially damaged installation - but after netinstall (and restoring previous configuration) everything works as it should.

I had similar strange behaviour with a 951G but mine also eventually became unresponsive.

A netinstall to v6 appeared to have fixed it

Well, it didn’t work well with v6 at all - flashing was OK, system is booting (at least I hear usual beeps), but it is not responding at all after netinstall, so I’ve flashed 5.25 again…

Problem solved.

So, if someone ever will encounter similar problems - try netinstall first (thanks, rjickity!), it may help.

i have same problem with my metal 2shpn it hangs and stop transmitting signals.. then i have to manually shut down the power and power again…even latest version 6.1 didn’t solve this… what is the problem .. with this device

try to upgrade firmware, if it is not the latest. for me it solved the same problem
