Hello, I have for few years HAP ac2. Recently (2-3 weeks) noticed that when I want to watch movies on my Android TV from smb server. Both connected by LAN cable to HAP ac2 directly. Movie every few minutes stops to play, and I must open it again. I started to test different parts, by few tests I checked that my smb server is ok. Disk reads and writes are constant. So I connected my notebook and PC directly to HAP ac2 by LAN cable. On both PC and notebook I have 1Gigabit ethernet. I tried to copy 30GB file over scp. I was watching speed while copying. I noticed this behavior (see attachment). Every few seconds there is drop in speed just for short time, and every few minutes there is drop almost to speed 0 Mbit/s. I think this can cause that movie playback on my TV suddenly stops. I have router OS 7.13 and I updated around 3 weeks ago. I am afraid that this update causes some instability in network speed. Did anyone noticed same issue ?
I tried all this combinations using HAP ac2 in middle:
My smb server to Android TV (movies stops playback every few minutes)
Copy file from smb server to my desktop (I noticed fluctuation in speed)
Copy file from my smb server to notebook (I noticed fluctuation in speed)
Copy file from notebook to desktop (I noticed fluctuation in speed)
I am 100% sure that this problem is cased by HAP ac2.
Of course, there will be variations in copying speed, because hAp ac2 is not one of the most powerful devices. Copying files through the router is a bit wrong. It usually doesn’t. We use a switch in the internal network and all traffic load is passed through it. Try it for a test and you will see that there will be no snags.
For example, I also use a switch and all LAN traffic goes through it. If I run the copying processes “straight” through the router, there will be large speed fluctuations and the load on the router’s processor.
HAP ac2 has 4 LAN ports for this purpose to connect multiple devices.
It worked fine for more than 2 years. Only since router os 7.13 i am no longer able to watch movies on TV becasue speed drops to zero every few minutes and TV has not enough of buffer to cover this drop in speed.
I don’t mind fluctuation in case there are no drops to zero. And since it worked with cheap DLink router for many years and than it work more than two years with HAP ac2 and problem occures only since 7.13. I don’t see reason to buy switch and had two devices just to cover simple home use case.
I have seen other reports about copy from/to NAS over AC2 and AC3 so this might be related (across versions of ROS).
As far as I know there has not been a real cause identified apart from the suggestion to not have that traffic pass AC2 (which I personally think is avoiding the problem, not solving it. But that aside …).
What is relevant is that AC2 is known for lack of resources and maybe 7.13 (with the restructuring of the complete wifi/wireless part) might be pushing it just that bit too much with your config.
If you do not see the problems on 7.12.x, stay there.
What you may try to identify the cause: when you track that network usage, can you also track memory usage of AC2 ?
If both correlate as issue, it may confirm the general thinking that there can be (depending on config and usage) issues with the combination AC2/7.13.
On the other hand: I have an AC2 (and cAP AC, same resources) running as simple AP on 7.13 with the new wifi drivers shortly after that possibility came out. It hasn’t reboot yet nor any other problems were seen.
So again, it depends on config and usage.
Thanks for answer. I tried to downgrade from 7.13 by downgrade button in package menu. It did restart but didn’t downgraded to 7.12 but it suddenly offered update to 7.13.1 so i did this update. I didn’t have time yet to test it properly bud at least i played movie on TV for 40minutes without any issue. With 7.13 it usually crashed playback of movie every few minutes or at least few times per hour. So i can’t conclude yet it is fixed but i will test it for few days to confirm. Meanwhile I will look for CPU and Memory usage. I enabled graphs so i can see memory and cpu usage.
