Sputnik and squid

I have a mini network that i want to upgrade with possibly a RB1000 as the gateway. I am fairly new and have only been using DD WRT so far so bear with me. I would like to keep sputnik as i believe it is worth the 20$ a month to not have to maintain a server and keep paypal running and i want to install a squid transparent proxy. Can I do this or am i on the wrong path. I am on a sat connect with a download limit so i want to get a little help from squid (or whatever routeros calls it). But the big thing is the sputnik hotspot. I am very new to captive portals. I really dont want to keep my own server it may be beyond my abilities or time. I would guess there would be some tutorial somewhere to set it up but i cant find it.
I had read the routeros does squid proxy. does this mean it would be done on the router or just pointing to a proxy server. I wanted to install a ans-9010b ram drive in the routerboard box if it does and i could get a enclosure for the 5 1/4 drive.

If i am on a dead end path let me know i dont want to dish out tons of money for something that cant be done.
