Stability of AX series

Two questions, first hopefully easy. What’s the meaning behind the AX, AX2, AX3 naming convention? Thought it was number of chains but not so sure.

Secondly, I’ve been reading the posts on the stability of AX wireless. Is it really ready for production or if I install one for a small client (to extend a lovely Starlink connection), am I going to regret it?

As the Starlink is topping out at (an impressive) 250Mbps, Wi-Fi 5/AC would probably be fine and is more stable?

Naming convention:
My view: similarity for hAP range with AC2 and AC3. Hence AX2 and AX3.
cAP AC becomes cAP AX
And then there is AX Lite which corresponds to hAP Lite (but make no mistake, it packs quite a punch for such a little bugger !)

Stability: to be honest, YMMV.
I don’t have any problems with it (not anymore since 7.10, 7.11 is even better but not yet released as stable. What’s in a name … ).
I run at home AX Lite, AX2 and AX3 standalone, all VLAN, all 7.11b2 (b4 since this morning).
For a customer RB5009 as capsman with 2x cAP AX, 1 x AX3 (to be extended to 11 cAP AX and 3 AX3). All 7.10

Last:
with that bandwidth limit, you may indeed be better of using known AC material.
But that AX Lite can also fill that line, make no mistake… (already saw 400Mbps using iperf3)

Well sort of except decision is should one stick with AC because of potential instability of the AX series when the speed of the internet downlink is 250Mbps :slight_smile:

Well it’s certainly not chains. hAP ac has 3 x 2.4GHz and 3 x 5Ghz but hAP ac2 only has 2 x 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Channels are indeed not the similarity.

The cases of AC3 and AX3 are (as far as I can see) close to identical. Same big ears too :laughing:
Only on AX2 they had to leave more ventilation openings but size wise, it’s similar to AC2.

Indeed they do - great price for learning RouterOS as well in the lab. In fact, I’m generally in awe of the power of RouterOS. If I was King of the World, Mikrotik would be #1 and not that nasty Cisco kit :wink: I was recently refreshing my knowledge of VLANs and started watching a Cisco tutorial. Turned off when I saw the nasty command line. Not that I don’t like a good command line (I have been in IT for over 40 years) but even the RouterOS command line is nicer.

At this point I would say wait a bit longer before customer deployments. Till known issues are fixed and polished, then you can start deployments. Throughput wise ax lineup is on pair whit rest of competition (2x2 dishes) and I have not seen any issues whit speed, should be solid performer.

Thanks for that. I’ll go with an AC variant for this particular install. Might buy an AX for the lab/home use.
