Static or dynamic modem address?

Hi everyone…

I’m pretty new to Mikrotik, so please bear with me.

We have a VSAT connection at the children’s hospital where I work (cure.org), in Malawi, Africa. At the moment, the VSAT company have provided us with two static public IP addresses. One WAN IP for the modem, and the other for the LAN, which connects only to the Mikrotik.

We’re thinking about moving over to the local ADSL provider, but they seem to only provide dynamic WAN addresses. Maybe I’ve got it set up the wrong way, but I got into IP > Address to set up the connection. I have both static addresses (to give an address to the Mikrotik WAN port, and then another route which also uses the static LAN address.

If I try to set it up with the ADSL line, it works fine, as long as the modem keeps the same WAN address, but as soon as that WAN address changes (either the modem being power cycled, or some other reason), the connection goes down.

Is there any way to get this working without having to use a static address?

Thanks!

Seth

Have you configured the interface to use a dynamic IP (which includes the netmask and route)? Check the settings for dhcp-client.

I feel like an idiot. Of course it’s working fine now.

Thanks for the help.
