Is it possible to port this working mode into 2.9?

No, we are not planning to do that.
Is there any way to simulate this behaviour using Bridge NAT or similar? I don’t mind having to hard code the client’s MAC address if needed, but I’ve been playing around for hours and have been unable to come up with a working solution. I realise the limitation of wireless client bridges, but in my situation I am unable to use WDS, EoIP or PPPoE as client will be connecting to non-Mikrotik AP. Everything I do must be done from station mode. Is there any way or am I ever waiting for 3.0?

we will not add new functionality to 2.9 as we do not want to break it during the last releases. all new features go into v3
