I have a basic IoT device (Sonoff TH316) set up in a hoophouse (for growing – yes, really, vegetables!).
A WAP is about 200’ away and provides connectivity most of the time.
However, often the IoT devices tries to connect to 2 other APs, both of which are Ubquiti Unifi APs much farther away – and all devices get a little confused.
All 3 APs use the same SSID (2point4) and I’d really rather not change that.
The WAP uses Auto for it’s channel/frequency selection and has settled on 2412/g (channel 1).
The 800’ AP (unifi-AP1) is set to channel 11.
The 1500’ AP (unifi-AP2) is set to channel 6.
How would you improve this situation? I think the goal would be for the IoT device to connect only to the WAP (it’s intended serving AP).
Wouldn't anyway the (stupid) IOT devices attempt to connect to these other AP's (to be rejected because they are blacklisted)?
What would be the issues with adding on the WAP a slave wifi interface with a distinct SSID dedicated to IOT devices?
I would find anyway preferrable to have IOT's on a separate wifi, as It would be easier to manage their access to the rest of the LAN and to the internet.
I was hoping there was a method/technique/approach other than access list reject in ROS or blacklist on Unifi.
As for chaning the SSID, I have this horribly complex environment (for a non-pro) and the SSID “2point4” is what I use for all IoT devices to help maintain my sanity.
It so happens that Unifi-AP1 and Unifi-AP2 do not need to provide connections for 2point4 (because both are outside and there are indoor APs that provide 2point4) so I have disabled that SSID for those APs.
One of these days, I’ll change the entire environment to Mikrotik devices and VLANs.
