I’m very new to MikroTik, and just received my first piece of hardware this week, a 951. I work for a custom installer specializing in home automation, AV, lighting, and security. Many of the installers on the forum for the control system we use are very keen on MikroTik, which is what led me to try them out.
From a home automation standpoint it is advantageous to segment your network into subnets or vlans for network devices, control systems, media devices, IP cameras, voip, etc. mainly so the devices that are being controlled by tcp/ip have as little conflict and crossover as possible.
I found this tutorial on setting up a MikroTik to run 4 separate networks.
My question is, and I know this may be pretty broad, but what are the advantages and disadvantages to setting up multiple networks using subnets like in the tutorial, using vlans, or using some combination?
