suggest hardware

hi,
I manage a small network of about 20 users, I would like a suggestion on what to buy hardware to perform the following functions

  • Web proxy cache
  • Load balancing
  • Poe active on at least 3 ethernet ports
  • Pppoe server

I saw the RB2011UiAS-IN-2HnD but unfortunately it is not active poe. with the hardware available to the RB2011 say you would be able to keep up the network with a CPU load of the reserve.
do you think 20 users online would make sense to install a web proxy cache? I improved the speed of internet browsing whereas the average user typically navigates always on the same web pages?

Hello logg,

I manage a small network of about 20 users, I would like a suggestion on what to buy hardware to perform the following functions

To give here a detailed or serious tip or suggestion you should give us some more
details, please.

What the 20 users are doing?
What is the bandwidth of the entire wan interfaces?

In general I would prefer a fast RouterBoard like RB450G or RB435G
and behind of them a small Squid Proxy on a Soekris net6501!

This would be ideal in may eyes and both boxes are able to deploy their full power.

hi Kreacher,
tnks for reply.i’ve two adsl 7 megabit PCC load balancing.user i’ve not particular requiemens, it olny browsing on web (facebook, youtube, some forum).
i’ve a small budget only 200 $ and i need at least 7 ethernet port .what we have in this budget?

2011 would most likely cover it. It only has 5 fastE and 5 GigE. Next would be RB1100AHx2 if you want to spent a little bit more. You could also use the CRS series. Basically the same processor as the 2011, but it has 24 GigE ports… Although the software currently has some bugs there.

Hello again logg,

a RB2011 will be able to cover all your wishes and fit your needs.

But the “Web proxy cache” you could also forget I think, it slows
down the entire RB and would not bring much effort in my eyes.
Or where you think would be the YouTube stuff stored for caching?

And with three PoE injectors you would be able to solve it out.

If you need it clean and for the 19" rack mount have a look at here:
WaveRF Gigabit 12-port passive POE injector panel - shielded

If not try out something like this able to get your hands on in your area.
MikroTik Passive Gigabit PoE injector, RB/GPOE, RBGPOE
