Suggested order for setting switch/vlans/bridges on rb951g-2hnd

Hi,

what would be the “right” or the best order in which to set up the core inner topology for the RB951g-2hnd? 951 has no console port, so one should be very careful when setting the core things like interfaces, switch (master, slaves, VLANs), bridges, etc. in more complex setups. In my case, I have three of 951s’ which support five VLANs with trunk connections via RJ45 ports and WDS links. The ports are scarce (only five per device), so it’s nice not to have a dedicated port for device management, but to do this over one of the VLANs. When you play with this, you can easily make a mistake.

All this can be done, but when you set up a new device, it can happen that the device becomes unresponsive. If you do this only once in a while, you easily forget about the details  The official documentation is basically all right, but explains each topic separately.

Hm… Just keep MAC-server enabled on at least one port until you finish with the initial setup, and you should be safe even without a console port.

Thanks, this usually works fine. However, I noticed that you loose connection even over MAC server if you, for instance, remove the bridge from initial configuration for this device. Is there any documentation which describes the necessary “inner topology” so that the CPU is reachable to the outside world? For instance, the importance of cpu port on the switch is nicely explained here http://mum.mikrotik.com/presentations/IT14/starnowski.pdf.
