Mikrotik RB3011 has 2 ports connected to the CPU.
Hopefully XAUI becomes common on low cost switch chips soon.
its all about “cost of production” of resulted/designed unit. so “ALL-in one PHY/switch” saved MT contractors - a lot of money and basically make possible to them to remain ~ affordable.
but frankly-speaking - i think OP right. i would LOVE such change, eg “one PHY chip per physical interface” in ERP/ERL -style.
if you use you router “as router” its a MUST and security-wise, concering switch chip (irremovable)weaknesses/exploitation(especially on L2) - its very-very important especially for mid-tier devices(CCR already had that, except 1009 and perhaps next-hw gen AH1200(and possible/upcoming AH1300 update will too, i guess)
