Support for PCI-Express Gigabit NICs

Does RouterOS support any PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet over copper NICs?

Specifically, SysKonnect SK-9E21 and SK-9E22, I think they have Marvel Yukon 88E8061 and 88E8062 chips, respectively.

All Yukon chips are supported by the sk98lin driver in the Linux kernel, the newest version of the driver is v8.12.3.3 and can be found on http://www.syskonnect.com. The latest vanilla 2.4.x and 2.6.x carry an older version of the driver that doesn’t support the SK-9Exx series.

Is there support for some other NICs, although I’m not aware of any other that are available. I know that Realtek has a new chip RTL8168 for PCI-E, but it seems there’s no driver for Linux yet.

P.S. Has anyone tried MikroTik RouterOS on a PCI-Express motherboard? Could I expect some problems?

we use 7501 intel mainboard with 10/100 and 1 gige . I think the gige onboard is pciE , also have 1000 pro MT installed and thats gigE as well but havent checked whether its pciE . Do you really have so much of a requirement for sending so much traffic through MT at pciE speeds? Normal PCI is capable of 400mbps without a hitch .

We have built a couple MikroTik routers based on Intel Server Motherboard SE7210TP1. This board is an entry level server board, but has video, 10/100 and GigE ports. It’s been a solid performer for us.

MikroTik Router 1 Specs:

(1) 3.2GHz P4 CPU
(1) 1GB RAM
(1) MikroTik Level 4 License
(1) SBE DS3 PCI Interface
(3) Intel Quad Port 10/100/1000 PCI-X Interface

MikroTik Router 2 Specs:

(1) 3.2GHz P4 CPU
(1) 512MB RAM (the 1GB stick we received is in RMA)
(1) MikroTik Level 4 License
(1) RB44 Quad Port 10/100 PCI Interface
(1) Intel SC Gigabit Fiber PCI-X Interface
(1) Intel Dual LC Gigabit Fiber PCI-X Interface
(1) Intel Quad Port 10/100/1000 PCI-X Interface

Router 1 replaced a Cisco 7204VRX w/NPE-400. The MikroTik is running far more firewall rules a couple hundred Simple Queues and runs circles around the Cisco. Only problem we see with deploying more of these setups is the lack of full BGP support from MikroTik.

Until MikroTik implements full Zebra (or equivalent) BGP support they will just be another “neat” router that is lacking some fundamental router features.

Best,

Brad

it’s on the way, don’t worry. 2.9 will bring some interesting changes (and improvements too).

We look forward to 2.9 and the new bgp it would really help to have this would make MT extremely useful

Agreed. V2.9 has several exciting improvements and if MikroTik can include the needed BGP upgrades as well they will have a winner.

Best,

Brad
