Hello,
I have a Fiber connection from Vodafone operator in Portugal.
The actual setup they have a Technicolour router connected to ONT.
I would like to connect the Mikrotik directly to the ONT device. I could put the technicolour in bridge mode and connect mikrotik with PPPoE but in this case vodafone says the VoIP phones would drop connections a lot of time. I really dont know why as VoIP works in TCP stack…
Anyway My question is, does Mikrotik support RFC1483 - PPPoA?
In last case i will need to give a try of putting technicolour in bridge mode and establish the connection with PPPoE.
Why would you need PPPoA in a fiber network? Is the network provider really using ATM?
All fiber networks here use PPPoE or a VLAN for internet traffic.
It is strange because I would think you run PPPoA only over an ATM physical interface or layer.
PPPoA is normally used with ADSL, where there is an ATM layer between the modem and the IP layer.
Here in the Netherlands the use of ATM is being phased out and all new developments do not use this ATM layer anymore.
(there is ethernet above the modem layer even with ADSL. VDSL and fiber to the home never used ATM)
But maybe it is different for you. No idea how they transport ATM over ethernet and how you can run PPPoA on an ethernet router, but maybe there is a method for that. Are you sure your ONT provides ethernet and not some ATM line interface?
