[Tell] me about compatable Hardware

I like Mikrotik, it’s a great platform. But a lot of time we run into small little hardware/software problems that cause the router to lockup. So I end up with some routers that never ever go down, and a few that occasionally do for no reason. The only difference is the hardware, so I ask you fellow mikrotik people. What are some good hardware choices for a core router. None of that routerboard stuff, it works fine, but it’s not powerful enough to be a core router for an entire network normally.

Thanks in advance.

I have not tried the new rack mount X86 machine designed for RouterOS.. http://www.mikrotikrouter.com/

I have used SuperMicro two flavors of server boards ( I Cant remember the exact numbers, but I will look them up) and they are like rocks. I have also used the HP /Compaq (I still call them Compaq) DL140 G1 platform just Loves RouterOS… They are CHEAP on the net and run dual hyper threadder Xeons… It is a large footprint 1U box, but for a data center core router, it works well…

I have one (DL140 G1) at work that firewalls off my accounting system and passes 100 users over a terminal services firewall rule and some 30 users via a full access rule set and 5 servers as well. All connected via gigabit.. At peak load running on 2.X (so only 1 CPU) I may push 2% avg is 1%..

I have used a couple of Intel boards for smaller nets (Like my net at home) that uses two wireless and three wired gigabit and have had no issues…

I am working with a overseas mfg on a “platform design currently” and will advise when it is ready.

In the meantime I would look at the rack mount X86 system for a unit that has been designed for RouterOS ($1099 to $1400 us) , and at the DL140 G1 (the G1 is VERY important) for a low cost alternitave (Ebay about $250 to $350 US) I hope this helps…

It can be difficult at times. Of course, I would recommend http://www.mikrotikrouter.com.
