I was noticing on my network around 3am telnet was using 1.8-2.2mbps and connecting to news.powerusenet.com.. Now that’s kind of strange if you ask me.. Does anyone know why telnet would be consuming so much bandwidth? Could it be another program utilizing port 23?
huh.. its a usenet/newsgroup service… apparently it can run over port 23 instead of its intended port 119..
Well yea, most (if not all) services can be configured to run on any port. Many offer multiple ports to their services due to firewall constraints.
You can’t assume it’s service A just because it runs on service A’s default port.
